You do need a rug pad
Here's why

Why You Need a Rug Pad

While we recommend a rug pad for all rugs, they’re especially important for flatweaves, whose slim profile requires extra padding.

A rug pad prevents unwanted bunching and sliding, adds a subtle lift, and gives your rug a more cushioned feel underfoot.

Our rug pads are made of recycled felt and natural rubber, whereas lesser rug pads’ thin, sticky web can damage your flooring.

Moisture and mildew resistant, a rug pad stops dirt and grime from settling in your rug’s fibers.

The right rug pad

A must-have for flatweaves and other lower-pile pieces, a rug pad is the secret ingredient to maintaining your rug’s appearance and longevity. Width-wise, you’ll want to trim your rug pad so it’s 1-2” shorter than your rug on all four sides. Height-wise, we offer two premium rug pad options, both made of cozy recycled felt and natural rubber.

Washable wool rug

  • Wool and cotton
    • You may find traces of dried hay, grass, or straw in your rug as grazing sheep often collect plant matter in their coats. Remove gently by hand or with tweezers.
    • Authentic wool fibers were used to weave this rug. Please note that when wool gets damp, it will smell like a wet sheep. This is the scent of lanolin, which acts as a waxy barrier against dirt and moisture.
  • Medium pile: approximately .39" thick (10mm)
  • Color palette: evergreen, olive green, sage green, moss green, chartreuse
  • Shedding is typical for most rugs for the first 6-9 months. The shedding quantity and duration varies by material, weave, and foot traffic.
  • Machine washable, line dry
  • Rug pad highly recommended for comfort, stability, and longevity
  • Due to its handmade nature a 3% variance in size, color and texture is to be expected
  • Clean on low power with a non-rotary vacuum or suction attachment (no spinning brush) only
  • Lightly vacuum the rug once a week
  • Use a high-quality rug pad to absorb shock and reduce damage
  • When it's time for a deeper clean, machine wash your rug with like colors on a delicate setting with 1 TBSP of unscented, clear detergent.
  • Wash rug separately with mild detergent on a gentle cycle at 86°F. Do not use fabric softener or bleach. Tumble dry low; remove promptly.
  • For sizes 6'x9' and 8’x10’, we recommend using a 60-lb washing machine (the large kind you find at a laundromat) rather than a home washing machine, which is usually 20-25 lbs.
  • For sizes 9'x12' and above, spot cleaning is best
  • Be sure to wash rugs according to their recommended washing machine size capacity. Please note: failure to adhere to size recommendations could result in damage to your machine.
  • A slight shrinkage of up to 3% can be expected for all washable rugs
  • The first few times you wash your rug, there will be some fluff left in the washing machine. Don’t be alarmed; this will lessen and ultimately stop. The yarn continues to open after washing, making the rug fluffier with time.
  • While wool is generally very stain-resistant, thanks to its natural lanolin, dog accidents are tricky. It’s difficult to remove dog urine from wool as it basically burns the fiber. In the case of dog urine, all stains should be attended to as quickly as possible to minimize possible scarring. When removing a stain, it’s important to dab the affected area rather than rub or scrub it. In case of spills, use a paper towel or cloth to blot the liquid. Add some clean cold water sparingly to the spot to dilute the stain (or wet a paper towel or cloth) and blot. If the stain is persistent, try using a mild clear dishwashing detergent. Check to make sure there’s no citrus in your soap before using; this could bleach your rug. Repeat this process until the stain is removed..
  • Light shedding, matting, and signs of fiber or thread breakage may occur over time, depending on the material and weave. In high-traffic areas, these effects may appear more quickly.
  • Spot cleaning instructions:
    • Lightly dampen a paper towel or cloth with clean water
    • Gently blot the affected area with your damp towel or cloth to dilute the stain
    • If the stain persists, try using an unscented, citrus-free, clear soap to avoid bleaching the textile.
    • Repeat this process until the stain is removed

The Collection

This washable wool collection, inspired by Moroccan design, is called Zwina — Moroccan Arabic for pretty. Lush wool, vibrant color, and spunky geometrics are all reminiscent of the one-of-a-kind rugs we source across the Atlas Mountains, with one primary difference: these pieces can be tossed in your washing machine.

The Design

Moroccan Arabic for the color green, Khder’s overlapping verdant hues resemble a field viewed from above.

The Material

New Zealand wool is a premium wool beloved for its softness and long fibers. Like all wools, it has a hydrophobic layer which repels dust and dirt, and lanolin, which provides its trademark luster and protects the fiber from breaking or shedding. It's woven onto a cotton warp for further durability.

The Maker

Our rug partner is a third-generation family-run weaving house in Bhadohi, India. They specialize in plush pile rugs, and their immense knowledge helped us improve construction for durability and less shedding. Their values are twofold: creating the highest-quality product and taking care of their team, supporting their weavers in whatever they need.

The Designer

Our in-house, all-star design team collaborates across three different countries. Based in Los Angeles, Istanbul, and Mumbai, they put a lot of thought into each and every collection they design. Starting with the weave itself, they determine material and technique, then create moodboards to capture the look and feel before starting to design. When designs are finalized, they conduct an extensive sampling process, perfecting each style and color before it goes to production.
